Basic English is a selection of 850 English words, using simple rules. It is both an international second language and a first stage for the teaching of any form of normal or Standard English. Basic English is a small part of Standard English.
The maker of Basic English was Charles Kay Ogden. Basic English's list of 850 words is still used to teach English in some countries.
Here is the Lord's Prayer in Basic English:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
Let your kingdom come.
Let your pleasure be done,
as in heaven, so on earth.
Give us this day bread for our needs.
And make us free of our debts,
as we have made those free who are in debt to us.
And let us not be put to the test,
but keep us safe from the Evil One.
The words in red are outside the first list of 850 words.
